How to Cleanse Your Tarot Deck: 7 Simple Methods

Why Cleanse Your Tarot Deck?

Your Tarot deck absorbs energy — from your own emotions during readings, from the people you read for, and from the questions brought to it. Over time, this accumulated energy can make readings feel muddled, heavy, or disconnected. Cleansing your deck is like clearing your browser cache: it resets the deck to a neutral state so the next reading comes through clearly.

Not everyone believes in energy cleansing, and that's perfectly fine. Even from a purely psychological perspective, the act of cleansing creates a ritual boundary between readings. It signals to your subconscious that the previous reading is complete and the next one deserves a fresh start. Either way, the practice is worthwhile.

When to Cleanse Your Deck

There's no mandatory schedule, but consider cleansing:

  • When you first receive a new deck — to clear any energy from manufacturing, shipping, or handling.
  • After reading for others — especially after emotionally intense readings.
  • After a heavy personal reading — grief, heartbreak, or conflict topics can leave residual energy.
  • When readings feel "off" — cards seem random, contradictory, or disconnected from the questions asked.
  • After your deck has been handled by others — whether borrowed or during a group reading.
  • Periodically as maintenance — once a month, at the new moon, or whenever it feels right.

The 7 Cleansing Methods

1. Smoke Cleansing

The most traditional method. Light a bundle of dried herbs — sage, palo santo, rosemary, cedar, or lavender — and pass your deck through the smoke, fanning it so the smoke touches all sides.

How: Hold the smoking herb in one hand and fan your deck through the smoke with the other, or place the deck down and waft smoke over it.

Best for: Deep cleansing after intense readings or when your deck feels particularly heavy.

Note: Ensure good ventilation. Be mindful of fire safety and smoke detectors. If smoke is impractical for your living situation, choose a smokeless method below.

2. Moonlight

Place your deck on a windowsill or outdoor surface where it will be bathed in moonlight, ideally during a full moon. Leave it overnight and retrieve it in the morning.

How: Set the deck face-up on a cloth near a window or in a sheltered outdoor spot. Avoid direct exposure to rain or dew.

Best for: Monthly maintenance cleansing. Especially powerful during full moons.

Note: Prolonged sunlight can fade card art, so retrieve your deck before direct morning sun hits it.

3. Crystals

Place a cleansing crystal on top of or beside your deck and leave it for several hours or overnight. Clear quartz and selenite are the most commonly used cleansing crystals.

How: Set a piece of clear quartz, selenite, or black tourmaline on top of your deck. Leave for at least 4 hours.

Best for: Gentle, continuous cleansing. Many readers keep a selenite plate as a permanent "home" for their deck.

Note: Selenite is self-cleansing and doesn't need to be recharged. Clear quartz should be cleansed periodically itself.

4. Knocking

The simplest and fastest method. Hold your deck in one hand and knock on it firmly with the knuckles of your other hand — three times is traditional, but use whatever number feels right.

How: Hold the stacked deck and knock on the top card three times with firm, deliberate knocks.

Best for: Quick cleansing between readings, especially when reading for multiple people in succession.

Note: This method is excellent for on-the-go cleansing when other tools aren't available.

5. Sorting and Reordering

Return your deck to its original order — Major Arcana 0-21, then each suit Ace through King. This physically and energetically resets the deck to its "factory settings."

How: Sort all 78 cards into order. Take your time — the meditative act of sorting is itself a cleansing practice.

Best for: When your deck feels thoroughly disorganized energetically, or after a long period without cleansing.

Note: This is also a great way to check that all 78 cards are present and none are missing or damaged.

6. Sound

Sound vibrations can cleanse energy effectively. Ring a singing bowl, strike a bell, clap your hands, or play a tuning fork near your deck.

How: Place your deck in the center of the space. Ring a singing bowl or bell, letting the sound wash over the cards. Repeat until the space feels clear.

Best for: Smoke-free environments, apartment living, or when you want to cleanse your entire reading space simultaneously.

Note: Even clapping your hands sharply three times above the deck is an effective sound cleanse.

7. Breath

Your own breath carries intention. Fan the deck out and blow gently across the cards, visualizing stale energy being carried away and fresh energy taking its place.

How: Fan the cards face-down on your reading surface. Take a deep breath, set a clear intention to release old energy, and blow steadily across the spread.

Best for: Personal, intimate cleansing. Works anywhere, requires nothing but yourself.

Note: This method relies heavily on intention. Be present and deliberate — don't just puff absently at your cards.

Choosing the Right Method for You

There's no "best" method — the right one is the one that resonates with your practice:

  • If you're practical and time-pressed: Knocking or breath.
  • If you love ritual and atmosphere: Smoke cleansing or moonlight.
  • If you live in a shared space: Crystals, sound, or sorting.
  • If you want a passive method: Crystals or moonlight (set and forget).
  • If you want a thorough reset: Sorting combined with any other method.

Many experienced readers combine methods — a quick knock between readings and a full moonlight cleanse monthly, for example. Experiment and find what feels right for your deck and your practice.

Signs Your Deck Needs Cleansing

  • Readings feel flat, generic, or disconnected from the question.
  • The same cards keep appearing regardless of the question.
  • You feel reluctant to pick up your deck or dread reading.
  • Cards feel physically "sticky" or heavy, not just literally but energetically.
  • Readings consistently feel negative or harsh, even for simple questions.

Trust your instinct. If your deck feels like it needs cleansing, it probably does.

After Cleansing: Reconnecting

Once your deck is cleansed, take a moment to reconnect before your next reading:

  1. Hold the deck against your heart or between your palms.
  2. Breathe into it with gratitude for the guidance it provides.
  3. Set a fresh intention: "I welcome clear, honest messages."
  4. Do a single card pull to test the connection — does the card feel relevant, clear, alive?

Your cleansed deck should feel lighter, more responsive, and ready to communicate clearly. If it still feels off, try a different cleansing method or combine two.

Remember: Cleansing is care. Just as you maintain your physical tools, maintaining the energetic hygiene of your Tarot deck honors the practice and ensures that every reading starts from a place of clarity and respect. Your deck gives you a lot — give it this small act of attention in return.
